very nice unrestored 100% original New Mexico license plate.  1939 issue; number S1-657.  school bus issue.  14 x 6 inches, black legend on yellow-orange background.  the plate is completely straight and flat with original paint as seen in the photos.  fresh out of the barn!
New Mexico plates with an S-prefixed serial number were issued from 1937 to 1939 for out-of-state salesmen, before it was realized in 1939 that the idea wasn't very business-friendly.  at this point a school bus plate type was introduced, so the unissued salesman plates were repurposed, with the already issued salesman plates quietly withdrawn.
this example S1-657 being an unused plate means it was probably intended to be issued to a school bus before the year ended abruptly and without warning.
