Uncommon, vintage "FREE STATE OF SOCORRO" (New Mexico) license plate. Plate is metal (not aluminum).
Socorro, New Mexico, 1953—A defense attorney in a DWI trial in Socorro, NM ultimately led civic leaders to the realization that the county had never been legally transferred from Spain to Mexico to the United States in the Nineteenth Century. Thus, the “Free State of Socorro” came into being. An article about the matter can be found in the June 8, 1953 issue of LIFE Magazine (Socorro "Port of Entry" photo from the magazine is shown).
