    Description

Excellent example of a traditional ice Tom Cod Jig.   These were done by respected whaling captain, elder, hunter and artist Dwight Milligrock Sr. of Little Diomede, Alaska.  Concerned that the old traditions were being lost, much of Mr. Milligrock's art centered around preserving the traditional techniques and tools used by early Alaskans.   Tom Cod was a staple of Bering Sea Cultures and this Jig was a tribute to the jigs his father used when he was a child.  Mr. Milligrock made several versions of the jig from traditional materials, this is the best example I've had. Please check out my other Alaskan artifacts.  Please note that the last picture is taken on a 1" x 1" grid for reference.
